Superheroes, Movies & Superhero Movies – Episode 051 – X2: X-Men United [2003]

Bryan Singer’s X-Men film was the beginning of the superhero boom we are still experiencing today. His follow up is considered one of the best of the genre. Wolverine gets a glimpse into his past and we are introduced to William Stryker. Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler steals the show and the X-Men are forced to work alongside their arch nemesis Magneto (hence the name X-Men United, right?) Released 13 years ago, does it stand the test of time? Check it out below.

  1. In this episode you guys brought up X-Men: Apocalypse, and it made me wonder if this film, X2 is still canon. A friend told me that the first three are no longer canon, because of Days of Future Past. Could you please clarify this?

    • It’s my understanding that Days of Future Past erases the timelines that existed in X-Men 1,2 and 3. So I believe your friend is right. Certain characters’ paths are now different. Like Nightcrawler. In Apocalypse he’s a student of Xavier’s but no one knew who he was in X2. Some characters seem to follow the same (or very similar) paths, like Cyclops and Wolverine. I think Days of Future Past was a nice bridge between the original trilogy and the new trilogy while giving themselves a reason to break away from the canon and change things up. Also erasing X-Men 3 was a good choice. 🙂

      • What was the serum that Mystique used on that guy’s backside in the bathroom of that bar? I know that it affects mutants, but I don’t quite know what it does.

  2. She was injecting iron in to him. Remember Magneto says to him the next day “Too much iron in your blood” and pulls the iron out. The guard wasn’t a mutant.

    • Right, that makes much more sense. When I watched it recently I didn’t watch the whole thing, I watched until just after the bar scene.
